In Reply to: Beware of 91 850 for sale below by Bob Pendelton! posted by Kurt .G on April 29, 2001 at 15:52:15:

I know, I know ... thats really bad and Im embarassed to admit it. Im a young guy, 25 yrs old ... I dont always make the right decisions based on wisdom and experience :-) The car was in Detroit, I was in Minneapolis, and I was sooo anxious to get the car ... I didnt want it sitting in Detroit for another week waiting to get inspected and delay shipping. (blushing) :-)
Before purchasing the car I did ask the seller if I could have it fully inspected by a BMW mechanic. The seller was very agreeable and very cooperative to the request. He offered to schedule the inspection and drive the car to the mechanic and wait for it. He also added that if I agreed to purchase the car upon a satisfactory inspection he would deduct the $150 inspection fee from my purchase price! I thought this was very generous and showed alot of confidence in the quality of the car he was selling. With that in mind and my excitement burning away at me ... I called him back and said "Ship it to me today!"

The following week waiting for the car to arrive was the worst week ever. I was so anxious to get the car I have always dreamed to own, yet I was also getting very nervous that I purchased it without an inpection first ... I could barely sleep. I had nightmares of the car falling apart about into pieces in my garage!!

However, the day the car arrived was easily one of the best days of my life. It was one of those days when you realize one of your dreams has come true. And the car turned out to be in even better condition than I had hoped. It was perfect inside and out. It look brand new! I brought it to the BMW dealer for its first oil change and a quick inspection and the mechanics told me it was one of the nicest 850's they had ever seen! Let me tell you, relief hit me like a ton of bricks!
Since then the car has been running like a dream with no problems at all. The only thing I have had to do was an exhaust replacement last month.

Anyways, I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!!! In hind sight I realize how STUPID it was to buy the car without first inspecting it. Even though it turned out really great, it could have been a real nightmare come true and I would have been totally screwed.

I agree with Kurt G! Given this guys cold response to Kurt's simple request should not only raise a red flag but also should be enough to walk away from the deal then and there. There will be other nice examples of 91 850i's for sale to come. Patience is a virture, something that I am learning slowly but surely.
