To add to the confusion...My experience shows that worn valve guides do not necessarily result in significant actual consumption. I had a 1983 633cs1 with about 180k miles on it, and it had worn valve guides by that time. What would happen is that the oil would seep through the guides in while the car was off. When I would start it cold, a large puff of oil smoke would come out the exhaust, and that was the end of it untill the next restart. No smoke during driving. The shop said that the guides would get juicy and expand a little when the engine was warmed-up. That car only used about a half a quart every 3000 miles as a daily driver.
