Andrew, I've thought about your problem since your original post but haven't responded because I don't want to imply bad news.
An engine that blows oil smoke under load has blowby problems and the PCV system can have no effect whether it works or not. The fact that it happened suddenly is intruiging but it could have happened all along depending on how much oil was in the car when you bought it and how many miles since you became aware of oil use. I apologise for questioning your basic observations but I'm just trying to help. If you had oil smoke under idle or cruise, it could point towards PCV but burning oil under load just begs to be from worn rings and blowby. Maybe it's possible that a low viscocity oil with detergents can free up sludge buildup around the rings and allow them to seat, I don't know. If it's any consolodation, I have a v12 with 130,000 miles that doesn't seem to use oil in the time I've had it.
I hope I'm just babbling and you figure it out!
