In any American engine and a few Mercedes and Jags over the years we have always taken out the plugs on an engine that has sat for a long time and has developed sludge or shallack on or around the rings making the engine smoke, Then added a good shot of two of Marvelous Mystery Oil all around the inner piston edge (sometimes added with a spray devise), then let the engine sit for a week. Then put the plugs back in and purposely drain the oil and put in 5wt Oil with a Can or two or Automatic Transmission fluid and run the car around for 3 or 4 days driving at least 1 to 2 hrs each day. Then drain the oil again and add 30wt or 40wt and see what happens. Sometimes this has freed up the rings and allowed them to seat stopping the smoking under a load.
Past experience, street mechanic stuff.
Good Luck, Kurt

Andrew, I've thought about your problem since your original post but haven't responded because I don't want to imply bad news.
An engine that blows oil smoke under load has blowby problems and the PCV system can have no effect whether it works or not. The fact that it happened suddenly is intruiging but it could have happened all along depending on how much oil was in the car when you bought it and how many miles since you became aware of oil use. I apologise for questioning your basic observations but I'm just trying to help. If you had oil smoke under idle or cruise, it could point towards PCV but burning oil under load just begs to be from worn rings and blowby. Maybe it's possible that a low viscocity oil with detergents can free up sludge buildup around the rings and allow them to seat, I don't know. If it's any consolodation, I have a v12 with 130,000 miles that doesn't seem to use oil in the time I've had it.
I hope I'm just babbling and you figure it out!
