In Reply to: Selling M5. Would I enjoy an 850? (m) posted by Aussie2U on April 29, 2001 at 22:03:38:
I read the archives a little so I'm not starting at ground zero, but in the case of a nice 850 6 speed (not csi - trying to SAVE money), how different would it be for performance?
Both the 850 & M5 weigh about the same. The V12 SHOULD have plenty of torque to pull it off the line. Right? What about noise levels, handling, braking, etc. Would you consider an 850 an equal performer to an E39 540i/6 speed?
Thanks for any info!
Theres a nice looking red 91 850i 6spd on carsales(private ads) for $60000 in Queensland. The v12 is a heavy car so it is slow of the line(stock). If you buy one, get the fueltronics chips, put K&N filters, change(or remove) the rear mufflers, they are very restrictive. If you buy a 6 spd, put 3.15 or 3.45 gears in it. These mods will get your 0-100(kmh)time down to well under 6 seconds, and 1/4 mile in the 14s. A nice set of wheels and the car looks as modern as a new 5 or 330 ci etc, for less money. It is the way to go.
Wind noise is almost zero, if the rubbers are in good condition. Dont take the car to BMW dealership to get work done, they will drain your bank account. Find a good mechanic who works on performance stuff, they understand the car much better.
Handling, the 850 is hard to rival. Keep the power in on corners. I found with mine that the more power i give it when entering a bend the better it responds. Once you get used to the car it will amaze you. 200kmh around 85kmh corners! Try that in a Holden!
To sum it up, an 850 will get more looks than your M5 and most people will think it is more $$$ too! If you get a 91/92 for $60000, budget $10000-$15000 for wheels, shocks and springs,Brembos exhaust, chips, diff etc.All up $75000, you will love it!There is a red 99 840 M62 currently for sale for $170000 and the car looks virtually identical! With the above mods, your car will outperform it too!
