What's really interesting is that the press went wild over the M5 in '91 and it had almost identical performance specs to the manual 8 series. The main problem from the non-owner's standpoint is the fact that it appears to be just a big heavy cruiser with no high-revving heart, which is what most BMW enthusiasts admire. They seemed to think that it did many things marginally well without standing out in any one area. However, I look at that as a plus. It was the best of both worlds to me (performance AND luxury). I have good 0-60 performance, superb high-speed characteristics (Autobahn King), a body design that still "wow" 'em (and always will in my opinion), and a high level of luxury, which is almost unheard of in the automotive world. You will find the same type of prejudice in the motorcycle world, café racer vs. BMW or HD.
