I finally got word from the independent, JUST BMW, that the flow control valves were actually stuck open and there were three vacuum leaks, which in both cases consume lots of oil and take away power. He let me know at about 5:00 PM. They will keep the car for a few days, to put the new valves on and also sample the transmission oil to see if it should be changed. On the contrary, the dealer simply said I need a new engine. I would like to know if all of you feel that this makes sense. It makes me happy to know that I most likely do not have a major problem,nor should I at 56,000 miles.
