Wow. I really think you should call BMW NA with this story. I just makes me mad that a dealer can't find these simple faults!!! But of course we are all glad that they are wrong. Still to go from a $10000 repair, to a $250 is pretty god spread.... idiots! What if you didn't know of this board or didn't get a second opinion, and trusted what the dealer said... After all they are trained professionals by the manufacturer....
