Ignore that dealer, he's another member of the current uninformed BMW hierarchy. The V12 is one of the most bullet-proof engines ever produced, and is still being used on the 750's. Proper maintenance is NOT expensive, unless you use the same idiot of a dealer who gave you that info. As the 850's age, there are a number of items that wear out and need replacing (and actually, they are all peripheral, the engines just keep going), and some of them are expensive (what do you expect for what was originally an $80K+ car?). The electronic throttles are good for 70K+ miles and then it's a simple DIY job to replace.

The V8's are also great cars, but don't let the uniformed color your impressions of the V12. You'll be happy with either, but as the great sage CarlT says "Everyone should own a V12 at least once is their life". You'll be happy with either choice.
