This is the first time someone has suggested CAM position sensors. Where does BMW hide these? Also, how would these sensors, or their output, be affected by engine temp... which seems to be a factor in my situation. Thanks!

Sometimes I feel like I'm always repeating this, but I had the exact same symptoms from the Cam Position sensor going (if bad, replace them both). Note that I've been told the following, but I'm not sure if it's true -- if a bank of injectors is shut down by a system fault, the fuel line back pressure could blow out a fuel pump (especially if old).
