See "what to expect" under the attached link for 850 maintenance issues. Briefly, as Stan pointed out and the archives here reflect, the v12 850s are very solid and relatively trouble free, particularly for a high performance $80k car. Before I purchased my 6spd 850, a half dozen BMW dealers in the San Francisco/Bay Area gave me the same story about the 850 being problematic. Needless to say, this has not been true as the car has required very little.

Went to the local BMW dealer to check out what cosmos black looked like in person, and was told that I should stay away from the 850 because the 12 cylinder is a big time expense to maintain, and that if I was set on an 8, I should stick with the 840. He wasn't very enthusiastic about the 8 series at all, and sort of shook his head. My favorite body shop guy also has alluded to the problem of the electronic throttles of the 12 cylinders and said "lots of problems, expense and worries, avoid them and stick to the V8". So, what is the real truth? I,ve browsed the board and looked in the archives a little, and seem to get a varied response to the maintenece of the 850. Thank you again for your help!
