I agree with Mark. Jack up the car and check for the leak. The tranny "problem" was probably due to low fluid level. The tranny lower gasket and filter are fairly simple to replace. If the main shaft seal is gone, then the exhaust and driveshaft have to be dropped. Check plugs and lines. Mine was a minor leak (Drive shaft seal, but became bad at over 100 MPH). When you're under there, it's also a good time to check/replace your lower oil-pan gasket as well. Take a deep breath, it sounds like your trans is still intact.
