After reading Rogos message, I looked through the archives for odometer tampering and found nothing! It seems this is a very sensitive issue.
I couldnt help but wonder why someone would say "we all know how easy it is". I myself thought that only the people high up at the car manufacturers would know the details of tampering with DIGITAL odometers. WELL IT SEEMS NOT!!
I put a few words into one of the search engines, and within a few minutes I have found a website where a computer can be purchased(by anybody of the street) that will change the odometer(E31 and about any other car)to any number!
I was very surprised, to say the least! How can you ever look at a cars odometer again and not think " yeah right, thats CRAP" I would put a nice bet on that almost EVERY car dealer in the WORLD has one of these computers.
AFTER ALL THEY ARE FOR REPAIR PURPOSES ONLY!! AND I SLEPT WITH PAMELA ANDERSON LAST NIGHT!!
I have lost total faith in expecting a used car to have legitimate miles on the odometer. They(the manufacturer of this device) even go as far as saying that it cant be detected when the odometer has been wound back with their device!!
Maybe I give a shit too much, maybe not. Any thoughts?

I would make sure that you have all invoices from services and make sure they appear to be valid in terms of milage and date of service performed.

When I bought my 850Csi all records were good except the last one: it showed a higher milage than actual by about 1000 miles; I think the previous owner and the shop wanted to make sure that they get BMW to reimburse the Inspection I.
The invoice mileage was 40123 (on Jan 07, 1998)while the oil sticker showed the next oil change should be 42211 by no later than Apr.07, 1998, which means that the service was done at 39211.
I had the buyer inspection done on Jan 19, 1998 and the car had 39638 miles on it.
