I guess I might have been wrong with the remark "We all know how easy it is to clock". I for one was victim of clocking once, and wanted to find out how this is done. I've even seen it done in person. All you need is software and a PC, enter the required mileage, press enter and wait for a couple of seconds... there you go a new and usually lower mileage. This is a very common problem in Europe. This is why FULL documentation is very important as most people are aware of this. It has been on all of the Dateline/60 minutes eqivalents over there.
These devices are available all over the internet, so if you find a mint BMW and the records are complete, but get the "they are at the office and I'll send then too you later" line... run.
Regarding BMWs and the dot marking that the mileage has been tampered with.. mine was tampered with and 100000km "removed" without the dot... so yes it is possible to do it without that trace at least. I would assume and hope that there is a trace somewhere, but I have not found a failproof way of finding out. So until I do I will only buy a car with all the records and verifiable history, Digital speedo or not...
