Not only will you save money, you will ensure the job is done correctly. There are several debates on the board as to what oil to use, but even if you overpay for Mobil 1 at $4.50 a quart and a filter at $15.00 you will still be ahead. If you are afraid to get your hands dirty, you can even get latex gloves at Pep Boys for 2 bucks for 3 pairs.
All too often, people think the BMW mechanics are some sort of magicains, mechanical surgeons or precision watch tuners. They aren't. The are human just as you or I are. Granted, the E31's do have certain systems that are best left to the experts. An E31 may be more sophisticated than some cars, but it is no Swiss watch. An oil change in an E31 is easier than it is on a Chevy. For other DIY stuff, there are tons of posts here detailing how to replace the OBC to replacing intake gaskets. Other than putting gas in the car, an oil change is the most basic of any maintenence on a car.
In other words, it is a simple task that can be done by anyone in less than 30 minutes. If you are too lazy to do it yourself or feel like you are too good to do it yourself, you deserve the puddle of oil on your floor and the associated PITA that goes with it.
Honestly, I really get tired of people bitching about the cost and/or the quality of the quality of work done at the dealerships. I've owned my 850 for nearly a year and have yet to let anyone lay a hand on it. If I want something done right, I have always believed that the only person I can expect to do so is myself.
So, next time you are looking for a recommendation for a good mechanic it may be as easy as looking in the mirror.

Help!...I had BMW Northwest (dealer) change my oil last week. I went to go drive my '91 850i for the first time since then today and was horrified when I was backing my car out of my garage to notice a puddle of oil and a bunch of small drip spots around the puddle. I called the dealer only to have a woman on the phone tell me that service department was not in today. Okay...by this time I am steaming upset at the mess they created (not to mention my plans foiled). The car had absolutely zero oil leakage before they put their greasy hands on it, now there is a puddle (literaly) of oil in my garage as the car continues to drip oil. I checked the oil dip stick and notice that despite the fact of at least a half quart of oil on the floor the oil lever was still way above the full marker. My question to you all is the cause for this mess I have because the idiot mechanic at the dealership put too much oil in my car or is there something else going on that is creating this? I didn't have a leak before I had my oil changed. Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it.
