On the 850 I would ONLY use the recommended brake fluid. The "green stuff" HOWEVER check the top of the knob on the canister of the resevoir which type to use. Mine's 7.1

Howdy Gents, My dad informed me today that he wants me to fix his OBC warning in his 740i sedan that says "Brake Fluid Low". So I checked it and it's right on the minimum line. However, even at that minimum level I don't believe it should warn of low fluid??? Wonder if aN 8 does? Anyway, thought I would add some fluid to fill the reservoir up to the Max line and see if it turns the warning off? But, on top of the Brake reservoir it says to use Dot 4 fluid, but it doesn't say which kind of fluid to use? Any special make or type etc. I ask this here because it seems logical that the E31 probably uses the same type brake fluid, so I'm also wondering what brake fluid is the proper type for the E31?? or am I sleepwalking and have overlooked that the brakes and powersteering are the same unit, same fluid? but I think that is just the power part, I think the fluid is still Dot 4. I have Castrol Dot 4 that I have to use on the Bentley Turbo so I wonder if that will work here also. Hmmmmm Man I sound dumb, and I've heard this discussed many times here, but I forget, the memory goes and even though I have done rear brakes on my 850i, I have never done work on the reservoir or power units yet and I never had to top off the reservoir. Hmmmmmm,
Carl, Derek, Stan, Steve, Jim, Loren, Phil, Greg, Mark and many others all probably know this in their sleep and are also probably gone somewhere being honored as fathers, so I hope someone is out there with the info so I can finish dads car so he can drive it today. I posted a message for help on the seven series message board here at bimmer last night, but no answers yet, I think those guys argue more than they do help each other :-) Hey, Happy Fathers Day to all your deserving Dads!!
Thanks, Kurt
