It may be different on the later model V12's, but on the V12 that is in a 1991 850ia, it was IMPOSSIBLE to remove the water pump without first removing the vibration dampener. Because the pump's impeller is the cylinder type, the pump must be pulled out 3 or 4 cm before the is clear of the block. There's not enough clearance between the back of the vibration dampener and the front of the pump housing to do that.

At first I was worried about getting it back on correctly, but it's indexed, and you can't get it back on incorrectly. The manual said that the way to get it off was similar to the fan clutch, but that's WRONG. I wasted some time with that before I tried the smaller bolts that hold it on. It's really pretty easy to get off and back on.

The conflicting information in the service manual suggests that there may be some variants out there or that it may be different for an autobox than for a standard trans.
