Fareed sent me the following message this morning which explains what he was 'meaning' to say, actually the same thing, he just forgot to say dampner instead of water pump. Read his post below as follows:

I am sorry if I was the cause of any confusion, it was not intentional, I
meant to say that it was not necessary to remove the large center nut that
SEEMS to hold the dampener, It does not it just holds the flange to the
crank shaft, the dampener is held to the flange with 8 13mm bolts although
eight these are much easier to take off than the single large one, no doubt
doing so will indeed get the dampener out but you will ruin the oil seal,
and you do not want to do that, that would be another can of worms. I hope I
have clarified the issue. I do have some close up shots of the area I will
mail them to you later on today.

So now, thanks to everyone's input, especially yours Steve, we can all now rest assured that the vibration dampner must be removed to R&R the water pump, but Not the big Nut! as the dampner comes off around it. Nice to know for all of us who will be doing this job. Thanks again Steve.

As I am also needing to replace my water-pump. Is there a special tool(s) needed to isolate the bolts on the vibration-damper to loosen the central nut? Perhaps similar to the tool used to loosen the fan clutch bolt from the water pump? Any help, from anyone, who has experience with this job would be greatly appreciated... I know that recently, Phil M. posted a message regarding this..thanks to anyone/all for your help.

After reading the helpful replys to my post, I went ahead and removed the eight 13m bolts- surrounding the central bolt-and the vibration-damper came free. I needed to remove the ribbed-belt tensioners, as well, in order to make access
easy. Phil is right, the damper is indexed, with a locating dowel, so refitting is easy as well.
Mark, thank-you for your tips and I did purchase a new set of (8) hoses (from Bekkers) with the correct green markings, along with a new thermostat. My old thermostat looks brand-new, by the way. In addition, to Phil's comment(s) about needing the additional clearance to "walk" the pump out of it's bore, there was no-way, one could access the bottom two bolts securing the water-pump without removing the vibration damper....Thank-you!! (to) all of you, for your generous help and assistance in this repair...
