It is safe to be supportive, even though you said yourself "I doubt they're seriously concerned with Philippe Brule's site as competition". If that's true, why ban him? Apparently you missed Alan's own post in which he said the reason for the ban was Philippe's insistence to invite people to his site. Did Alan and Charlie have that little faith in the posters and readers here? There is no way anyone is going to leave this site or for that matter pay that much attention to a kid in his twenties if he says "Hey leave Bimmer and come over to my site instead", we'd laugh and ignor it and wish him well, which is what Alan and Charlie should have done.

But Philippe never said that, he just said hey come and take at look at whats new over here now. There was no competition, especially when the majority of posters here helped build both this bimmer website as well as helped to build Philippe's website and continue to support them both now more than ever, so why the separation? It was a happy successful Uncle to minor nephew relationship to everyone except Alan and Charlie? Big surprise to the rest of us!

When did Phillipe become anything worse than a little bothersome (at times) grasshopper who was actually creating a thing of beauty with his site? It's actually a testiment to this site that Philippe's site exists, so if your RoadFly or Bimmer why diminish your own quality in being if their is no fear of competition? What the Kid did with his site is short of phenominal, Bimmer should be proud that he started here with them and all of us.

Also Mark, you did misunderstand me somehow on a very important point, I never said that Alan had not been cordial and very supportive, I simply said that they hadn't returned any of my e-mails and many others who e-mailed them (as I have been told) and as Alan himself admitted in his post.

Also, what I said was that Alan and Charlie's attention should really be concentrated on improving that same cordial and supportive attention you described being given to you by answering more of those who contact them in the same manner . That would be much better than getting too familiar with the Axe and just arbitrarily banishing a young poster with a site that the majority of the posters and readers here supported wholeheartedly, helped create and had their cars listed there and had helped with the technical information etc. etc.

That kind of misunderstanding and misuse of power with Alan and Charlie had to happen simply because they truly didn't understand how involved most of the people here were with Philippe's site. That kind of misread of the involvement and desires of their posters can only diminish and tarnish the halo if not eventually (if it continues) destroy the very thing of beauty they have created here.

I'm not saying that Alan and Charlie are bad guys, I'm saying that they simply made a very Silly mistake, obviously without investigating their first impulse before acting. Philippe and his website truly was a testiment to the intelligence and maturity of those who run this web site. No one is perfect, they did make a mistake. Now are they mature enough to admit it and correct it? Or will I get the Axe and will you be appointed head technical advisor of all bimmer sites! :-) We shall see.
Sincerely, Kurt

Kurt,

It is Alan's board, so when you boil it all down, since he's paying the piper, he gets to call the tune. I've had several e-mails with Alan, and in every case, he's been cordial and very supportive of the E31 community. And let's face it, this is a pretty damned fine forum.

I don't think your comment regarding Alan's motives of self-preservation are accurate, since the E31 board is such a tiny percentage of the overall bandwidth roadfly.com generates. Given the success of www.bimmer.org, I doubt they're seriously concerned with Philippe Brule's site as competition.

I would, however, encourage the board moderators to clearly state the "rules of the house" to prevent this type of event from happening in the future.

Mark
