Apparently you can't charge them both at the same time as one. Something with the system as you described being possible. Here in fact because of that very problem and also because he is having trouble posting at the moment here on the site, is another message I just received from Bert which he asked me to include as a tail end to his previous post I put above.
From Bert today:
I can't respond to messages on the e31 board. Reference saving the batteries, last winter I simplified matters by buying a second "smart charger" and attaching each one directly to a battery. They can be left on all the time, but I ran them both through an electronic timer for 4 hours a day three days a week.

The problem with the 850 is that you really don't know which battery you are charging, ...
Aren't the batteries directly paralleled into the starter circuit? Unless there's a set of relays isolating the starter (which would suprise me), then any charger will charge both batteries simultaneously.
