After I upgraded to an 8mm wire set, I had a problem like that, though not as dramatic. Turned out the new set of wires had a bad pickup sensor on one side. Replaced them and it happened again... the after market makers were basically using the stock BMW pickup sensor, but since the cables were 8mm, larger than 7mm stock, the sensor wouldn't fit around the wire... so they commonly DRILL them out a bit, then slide them on... problem is they often overdrill, the gap is too wide, and bingo, intermittant connection... it would work, sputter, run on 6, then work again. Third set, after much complaining, was fitted right. But I suppose it can happen even with stock wires if the sensor is bad.

Probably not it, but after my hours and days of frustration last year, I figure better safe than sorry. Simple part, dramatic problems if its a little off...
