Larry,

No problem. Good luck on the tint. Just remember not to go too far down, as some laws are just as stringent on tint as they are on radar detectors. Depending where you live of course.

I want to remove the mirror to put a strip of window tint up there to hide my radar detector behind (just don't like every Tom, Dick, and Harry seeing it from outside the car). I don't plan on removing the glued on button - the mirror is in the way and makes installing the tint difficult. Thanks for the write up!

Larry,

From what I remember, there are only a few steps to remove the mirror intact.

If you examine the "neck", the piece attached to the window, you will notice that the side facing the windshield is metal, while the side facing the inside of the car is plastic.

First, remove the plastic cover and carefully disconnect the plug hidden inside.

And second, very carefully, pry the mirror off of the windsheild. The mirror is attached to the windshield via a button that on my car is very well glued to the glass. The metal side of the neck, a set of bars that allow the attachment to the button. If I had a digital camera I could show you.

As for the wiring in the mirror, I would assume that the three wires going into the mirror are for power and signal for the infrared remote and self-dimming function of the mirror. The two on the back are quite possibly 12VDC, I think there are others on the board who have tried this, but I cannot recall the results. And as for the dustcover, it will cost you $400+, unless you have another way, BMW doesn't part out the mirror.

Last, why are you looking to take the mirror off? Is it not working correctly, mechanically or electrically? If you are replacing it for looks and yours works fine, would you consider departing with it? When I bought my 91 850i, the mirror's retaining ring was busted and I had to purchase a normal mirror, as I could not see paying $400+ because of a small piece of plastic, as with many 8 parts, you have to buy all or nothing (headlight buckets, ashtray light, etc.)

Anyway, hope that helps, and let me know about the mirror.

Do you know how to get that mirror off the windshield?

Larry Bushaw

No one on the board had an answer so I spoke with a mechanic who thinks you can get a plug for the smaller jack that allows you to power a radar detector.

He also thinks that there is a dust plug for these two ports.

I will grab the VOM tomorrow morning and see if these are hot. The larger one seems empty though.

I hope the picture shows the ports clearly. I shot it through the front windshield.

Mike
