Moi,
The windows will automatically retract if the force to close them get's too great. This is the safety feature in case someone's hand is out the window when closing. The window could be binding (door alignment) or the rubber weatherstrip is getting old and sticky. For the weatherstrip, use BMW's product called Gummipflege, or if unavailable, try glycerine. Don't use silicone based products on the rubber as they don't mix. If you scroll down a bit, there's some discussion about checking the door alignment. My passenger side window does the exact same thing when the rubber gets dirty.
