In believe that damage occurs in neutral if the car is pulling. I think that the thing to do will be to shut the car off when you are stopped for prolonged periods where possible - or park???. I really have no experience with this problem, I was merely relaying a possible diagnosis for the symptoms described based on several other similar accounts to yours. If no one else chimes in on this topic, then I would find a good BMW repair shop and tell them the scenario. That information may be more useful. If I were in your situation I'd start looking for a good used or rebuilt transmission, start saving for the repair, or trade it in quick!
