I had the same problem with my 1988 735i. After further research I discovered that the early e32 735i has Motronic 1.3 which has a fairly basic fault code system. To read the fault codes on the Motronic 1.3 systems you don't need to depress the gas pedal as they automatically display the fault codes by blinking with the key in position 2. I don't have the manual in front of me which gives the 7 or so fault codes, but the information is contained in Bentley's 3-Series Manual if you have one available.
