Buying new 2001 BMW in Canada by US citizen (archive)

Did i hear correctly that US residents can buy the same model 2001 new bmw in Canada and just bring it into the USA without duty and there are no problems with registration since they are the same car including the smog. is this a way to save significant amount in buying a bmw or other brands? any specific experience? directly: kelfg@aol.com
