Brown defaults to earth.
If you have a spare bulp I suppose you could put the red/wht to the bulp and ground the bulp to car metal. If it lights up, there you are. If this goes for the brown wire I'd be very much suprised, then again my wiring has been @# by some amateurs with household scissors and I don't know about yours.
