Check engine light stays on 96 740il (archive)

Recently when hard accelaration occured, my check engine light came on and wont go off. Also, the cars performance is sluggish with a noticable rough idle. Please advise if the computer may be getting a bad signal from somewhere. Im stumped on this one as i thought time would cause the light to reset itself and cure the problem.
