The 'Bentley' method works on both doors on some (most?) cars. It takes quite some strenght. When I needed to do this I actually used a wrench on the key and turned very very very slowly as not to break the key. Once through the 'resistance part' I could use my own fingers strenght to open and close the door. So that's how dificult it could be. I suspect I still need to replace whatever I bent (resistance part) in the lock.

I think you haven't turned the key far enough yet as it does lift a bit when you try. As far as you can turn the key now in the 'useless' direction you should be able to turn against the resistance part. Mind you, don't break the key -it will certainly feel like you're trying- as that will leave you stranded indeed.
The lock will fully raise. Mind you someone at this forum mentioned that of some models the door handle will not raise far enough to do the trick and BMW has handles that can be raised an extra 3 mm or something. My car is 1992 740 and didn't have that problem although I suspected it because of the strenght it took to open the lock.

There is an other way to enter the car by lifting the number plate at the back and getting to some wires, but don't ask me the details. This the dealer told me, but they didn't want to give further details.

Good luck with it, tell us when you're succesful.
