Please let me know what you find regarding this issue. My '88 735i sometimes groans when in winter from the power steering. I also replaced the fluid and filter to no avail. I can say that the problem does not seem to indicate to need for immediate replacement of the pump. My car has been this way for 2 years and 30k miles (since I got it).

My 88 735I (188k miles)power steering groans loudly when first started in colder(> 45 F.)weather. It does this until warmed up slightly. I have changed the fluid and filter and flushed the system. It drives well, it is just annoying. Am I due for a new pump or is there a check valve, etc. which might be leaking down over night?
