Thanks WimE - I will probably just leave it be. I would probably just get frustrated and break the damn thing. It probably better off locked up so my kids don't play with it. I am never in the backseat anyway. I actually did have it out at one point. I have got to get myself one of those Bentley manuals!

According to the Bentley
if you would have had it down, then you'd be able to see two holes in the low backplate that retain a type of spring. To take out 'a healthy' armrest it tells you to squeeze the holes together (sort of trigger like) to unlock the spring loaded retainer.
As you have this problem of not being able to get at it I suppose you might have a chance when you take out the boot back wall carpet and try to find these holes from the back.
Of course, even if you find these holes to squeeze (strange sentence:) it might not help as obviously something got loose or jammed.
