I have a 1994 740iL with chrome door handles, a wood covered ashtray and wood around the gearshift (automatic), all factory. All the wood is burled walnut, which as you likely know is a rather dark wood.

I also have a 1981 733i (e23) and it has wood around the gearshift (manual). All the wood in that car is a much lighter teak. I believe with the revision of the 7 series (E23 to E32) much of the wood was initially removed - then added later in the last versions (1993-94?).

I found some info at www.edmunds.com. Get a price on specific years and look at "What is new for this model year".

Hope this helps,
Jeff
