When did they fix these transmission problems he is talking about? I have an 1989 with 130,000 miles and the tranny is tight as ever!

1989 735il

Trans only stays in ecomony mode, great for gas milage not so great for performance. Any suggestions what may be the problem? Is it an easy fix? Is the switch easy to remove?

Like the above post most likely Coke or something has goobed it up. Now for the BAD news. The tranny on your '88 735i is NOT the best they manufactured. The output clutch is of bad design. There was/is a technical service issued to fix it. Some never got fixed properly. (mine went out at 100k miles and that's when I became soo educated as to it. My recomendation is to not
run it in "sport" mode so as to prolong life.
