My 93' 740iL would periodically go into a Trans Program mode (shut-down) while under full decelleration (foot fully off throtle). If I turned off the car, wait a minute, then restart, it would work fine again. After taking it to a dealer to check the error codes, the dealer said that there was an error with the air-flow reading which is fed to the xmission computer. They said it was probably a sticking idle control valve. I replaced the valve, but problem still existed. Dealer then recommended replacing the mass air flow sensor. I replaced it. Same problem yet. Finally, the dealer contacted a BMW xmission specialist about the problem. They stated it could be a sticking crank case ventilation valve. I replaced the valve.
Fixed!!!!!
If you have this problem, I would recommend starting with the crank case vent valve. (cheapest part) Bill Rumble
