Yes, that sounds like the symptoms of the brake accumulator, or bomb. Nitrogen over hydraulic, as I understand. I'm sure others can tell you how to replace it yourself, if you wish. Its not too difficult, and you can get the part over the internet at about 1/2 price. But its so common the dealer should always have them in stock. In the meantime, don't tailgate!

1988 735i. When I slam on the brakes (to stop as fast as possible)the car does not immediately slow down. But if I ease down on the pedal them push them hard the car stops fine. What is this? Is this what is called the
"bomb" brake pedal or something. This delayed reaction of the brakes can be dangerous in certain situations ie. rear-ending someone if you do not have enough braking time. Any info would be appreciated.
