Problems after Transmission Service (archive)

Hi all.

Just attempted a simple transmission service on my '89 750iL as the fluid looked as if it had seen better days. The car shifted fine prior to my tinkering with it. (I know...)

Anyway, I drained the fluid, removed the pan and attempted to remove the three bolts that hold the strainer to the internals. Unfortunately, the poor quality T27 Torx bit I was using gave way and began to strip the inside of the bolt head. As I need the car for work, I elected not to replace the strainer at this time, replaced the pan with a new rubber gasket and poured in approx 3.5 Q of Dextron III.

When I took the car for a test drive, I found that although the car is in reverse, it seems to "catch" only upon my reving of the motor whereas previously, it would catch at idle. I have also found that the car is slow to catch a gear when pulling away from a light etc. I can't imagine that I have caused any major damage as I left the internals of the transmission well alone. This problem does concern me however as I could do without any major tranny repair bills. Is there an ajustment that I have missed (I followed the Bently manual), or some kind of "bleeding" that I have to perform?

Any input and help would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Andy.
