you can replace the head unit with an off rack CD unti "Without" any re-wiring of the speakers. I just had a Sony In-dash cd player installed and it works great with the factory speakers and factory amp.

I recommend buying from Cruthfield.com they show you what units fit 735i,also sell an adapter wiring harness to make the installation easier.

Good Luck

I recently bought this car, which has the original cassette stereo and speaker system. I have been told that since the speakers are amplified, I cannot replace the head unit with an off the rack cd head unit without extensive rewiring. Also, I'm told that speakers cannot be replaced without significant rewiring. Can anyone confirm this? I'm also told that a cd changer can be put in the trunk and run through the fm tuner on the original head unit. Has anyone tried this. Obviously, I'm looking for the most bang for my buck.
