This message is just to describe my experience with a transmission problem on my 740 and how I got it resolved. I live in the bay area (Sunnyvale) and I just wanted to post my experience. I have 91K miles on this car that I bought back in Feb. I am the second owner and from the records, this car had been well-maintained. Two weeks ago, I noticed that occasionally I couldn't go in reverse. The engine revved, but the car wouldn't shift into gear. I had no problem with the other gears.
I took the car over to DM Motors in Palo Alto. They had previously done a good job tracking down a fuel pump problem a few months back, and didn't charge me for all the labor time they spent thoroughly checking out the electrical system. I also had them do a 90K service II and fix my malfunctioning rear shade. They checked the transmission then told me that I needed a new one. I was looking at a $6600 tab. This was in addition to the $1100 labor charge that they laid on me the following day. No other alternatives were recommended concerning the transmission. I got the feeling that they didn't want to tamper with it. I told them to forget it and that I'd check someplace else. I then talked to Stevens Creek BMW and German Motor Specialist in Sunnyvale off Mathilda. Stevens Creek told me that it sounded like a Valve Body problem. German Motor Specialist said the same thing. I would've taken it to Stevens Creek but they were too booked up and couldn't get me in before the second week in November. German Motor Specialist took my car the next day, removed and rebuilt the valve body, and got my car back to me. I took it there on Wed, got it back Friday morning. The car works fine now, shifts very well. If it holds up over the long term, I saved myself about $4900. I had a good experience with German Motor Specialist. Would recommend them.
