Yes, the two ruber fuel hoses that everyone seems to be mentioning, are definitely culprits. Though not recommended, if you want to see the leak, pop the hood and turn on the engine. Most likely the pipes are cracked at the ends. I just replaced both in my 88 735i after smelling fuel -- as you describe. The cost about $50.00 each if bought from the dealer. Goodluck

I had the same smell in my 735i. I found one of my fuel hose was leaking. Just replace hose with new one from O'Reily Auto Parts.

There are four rubber fuel hoses on the left side.
Two are above the valve cover and two are below the hydraulic brake booster. The two below the booster are hard to see and consequently rarely replaced...access is through the wheel housing.


Check the two rubber fuel delivery pipes near the bulkhead at the left hand side of the engine, these need checking from time to time. Don't delay, do it now! Best of luck.
