Yesterday I dropped my recently acquired Islandic Green '90 735iL (151k mi) at the dealer for a couple recall updates that the previous owner neglected (radiator cap, brake switch and fuel line). The car was supposed to be ready by noon. At 12:15 I get a call from the service guy - my iL has been hit by a delivery truck.

The hit wiped out the right rear tailight and put a nasty approx. 18x10 dent in the right rear quarterpanel at tailight height. They have a bodyshop at the dealer that is supposed to fix it and repaint the entire quarterpanel, claiming that the color matching will be fine. From what I understand from the local CCA website, this is one of the more capable dealers in this area.

Has anyone had experience in getting this kind of repair done without repainting the whole car? Should I demand a repaint? The car has a few minor shopping cart dings and scratches, but the overall finish is in very good shape.

If you can have paintless dent removal done, I would go that route, as it will produce an excellent result if done skillfully and will do the least harm to your car's resale value. That being said, there is often much made of a car's having had bodywork done to it. To my mind, bodywork is fine as long as the accident was nothing too serious (like yours) and is done PROPERLY. The problem with many bodyshops is that: (1) they pull out, bondo and sand bodyparts that should be replaced; (2) they do not take adequate time to match the paint and to use the OE paint; and (3) they do not remove all the trim to ensure a factory like finish. If you find a place that does all of the above, your car will be fine and you will never know the difference. Additionally, the car will be properly repaired so you should have no concerns about the overall structural integrity and rustproofing of the car. Because your car got damaged while in their custody, you should insist on nothing but the best job. Good luck.
