The ticking and clicking is perfectly normal. The ticking is the fuel injectors opening and closing, and the clicking is the combination of the valves opening and closing and the rocker arms moving on the camshaft lobes.

Okay so this might a daft question, but everyone here is so helpful ;)

My recently acquired E32 sounds great. However when I opened the hood, I hear a rapid ticking/clicking noise at idle, on pulling on the accelator lever (??) the heavenly sound of the engine drowns out the ticking/clicking. But it is noticeable at idle.

What could this be?
