HVAC stepper motor nightmare! (archive)

I have had my '88 735i for just over a year and the heat and A/C have never been right. I had just about decided to try and pawn this problem off on someone else whe my conscience and my love for driving this car convinced me to remove the dash and try and fix it. After 4-5 hours of removing the dash, I found the problem. The two stepper motors on top of the heater box that control the blend doors had previously broken their mounts. However, rather than fixing the problem, the previous owner just removed the motors and broken mounts, threw them away, and put the car back together. No wonder it didn't work!

Now I need some advice on the best way to go about repairing this. I believe I can make some new motor mounts out of sheet metal and epoxy. Has anyone ever done this successfully?

When you buy new stepper motors, do they come with the gear box or will I have to buy these seperately?

Is it possible to replace the entire top cover of the heater box with a new one with intact motor mounts? Or will I be better off making my own mounts and sparing myself the work of removing the top of the heater box?

Thanks for any help. It has been a long and depressing weekend....
