Thanks for the guide.
I rememeber doing this for my E28 and E36 but the garage said it couldn't be done on my E32, hah!

Anyway took it apart this afternoon and the problem is that the mirror was replaced previously by one that doesn't have a heated coil so I have to wires sticking out of the mirror assembly with nowhere to connect to. The things people do to save a few bucks.
