Wandering Petrol gauge, anyone? (735i) (archive)

Just cleaned my petrol gauge sensor this weekend after getting fed-up with the non-linear response the thing was giving (eg linear above 1/2, then "drop" to 1/4, stay at 1/4 then drop to empty, then light comes on).

I've cleaned the wires and the float contacts, the connector and flushed out all the residue/silt, and it goes better. Now I'm watching it closely, I see it can vary up to 1/12 of a tank IF THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON or not... any one else have this quirk?

Just wondering how worthwhile it would be to look at the instrument cluster power supply etc... anyone had this as a first symptom of the capacitor problem?

Thanks

Max F
