I just went through the learning process of this myself. www.koalamotorsport.com has a good article outlining everything.

But here's what to look for:

Bad:
Nikasil M60B30 1 725 970 or 1 741 212
Nikasil M60B40 1 725 963 or 1 742 998

Good:
Alusil M60B30 1 745 871
Alusil M60B40 1 745 872
Alusil M62B44 1 745 873 All M62 engines are Alusil

The casting number are on the engine blocks, so you have to get under the car. They are located on the right side, along the 3rd cylinder, slightly above the coolant drain bolt.

This is taken directly from their article, compliments of koalamotorsport!

Search the archives too, there is so much useful info there. This board has saved me thousands of dollars by allowing me to make informed decisions.

Great place to learn!
