Help I'm Think I'M being ROBBED(TRANSMISSION) (archive)

I Was driving my 1988 735i with a auto trans when I notice
a smell and some smoke coming from beneath the car I took it to a near by gas station anf had them put it on a lift. We looked and say the leak coming from the transmission and the mechanic told me that my front seal was gone and need to be replaced. I took the car to a transmission specialist
and told him that the car was driving and shifting normally
accept for the leak and to just fix that. I got a call from them after I dropped off my bimmer two hours later telling me that I need to get my trans totally rebuilt stating that the pump inside the trans was not working and that cause the leak. I might be stupid but if the pump was'nt working would the car give me some kind of indication besides a leak
Well to make a long story short I told him to put everything back the way he found it and I will get a 2nd opinion.His original price for the rebuild $3.400 after I ask for my car back his price went down to $2.200. ?WHAT SHOULD I DO HELP.
