I'm not transmission competent but I do know hydraulic systems and if the car doesn't leak when stopped but while running my first uneducated guess would be the pump or whatever the pressure building device is, is working fine to move the fluid through the system to start leaking and allow normal shifting. But to be the devils advocate, if the transmission has to come apart to fix it, I mean totally apart, you may consider replacing all the wear parts at that time as it would take just as long rebuilding with used as it would with new. But that depends on the condition of the old and how much you are willing to pay. But I reiterate, go get that 2nd opinion. Think of it as Back Surgery and the first doctor vying for the job by dropping his rate instantly when you show doubt.

I Was driving my 1988 735i with a auto trans when I notice
a smell and some smoke coming from beneath the car I took it to a near by gas station anf had them put it on a lift. We looked and say the leak coming from the transmission and the mechanic told me that my front seal was gone and need to be replaced. I took the car to a transmission specialist
and told him that the car was driving and shifting normally
accept for the leak and to just fix that. I got a call from them after I dropped off my bimmer two hours later telling me that I need to get my trans totally rebuilt stating that the pump inside the trans was not working and that cause the leak. I might be stupid but if the pump was'nt working would the car give me some kind of indication besides a leak
Well to make a long story short I told him to put everything back the way he found it and I will get a 2nd opinion. His original price for the rebuild $3.400 after I ask for my car back his price went down to $2.200. ?WHAT SHOULD I DO HELP.
