I gave for $5.5K 2 years ago for a 88 735i with 143K miles that turned out to be a very dependable driver. There are great 735i's with half the mileage in the $3-4K price range as others have pointed out.
This week I was talking to a dealership sales manager about E-32's they get on trade-ins. He said they do not put them on the lot but move them out the back door.
He said they recently traded for a 92 735i in good condition on a new BMW for $8200 and sold it directly for $8500. It had 125K miles but had received a new engine at 70K miles because of a wrist pin failure in one cylinder.
There is nothing wrong with buying old BMW's if you buy right and get a solid drive train. Good looks is a plus but has little to do with function. This board is the best way to save big time before and after buying that BMW that know one else will ever own. I just sold a solid 82 733i for $500 but the guy had driven it as a loaner for 2 months prior so he knew the car.
SIX GEES IS TOO MUCH for that age with those miles on it. He should at least be considerate, though it is a BMW it is still a car. Like Eric said, you most definitely won't be able to sell it. You'll have to enjoy it till it essentially dies out. Otherwise, it is a great car plus you said it was well maintained by the dealer. Since it's nice outside I would negotiate it so he could accept something less that 6K. Buy it if you can, you shall enjoy it. But be aware that 6K is probably not fair to you. I bought mine for 6K and it has 135K on it and is an '89 750iL. Bottom line, it's price is too high-Really.

Help!
I am considering buying a "88 735i. It is silver w/ black interior. Exterior is literally perfect but the interior is worn but is readily fixable. This car has very high mileage ie. 295K. Local BMW shop has serviced this car since new and removed the head last summer and reworked it. They say it is in pristine condition. Private owner is selling...he wants 6K. Any ideas , opinions etc.
I currently own a '87 635 L6. I'm a believer but I want some advice from 735 owners. TIA
