The brake system uses brake fluid, and is not connected to the PS pump fluid. The system that uses Pentosin, a mineral based fluid, provides the boost to the brake system (through the attached booster, that is the thing under the brake reservior attached to the firewall), as well as the power steering and rear suspension system. If your hydraulic system reservior has brown fluid its either very old or the wrong kind. You should have it flushed right away. I suggest you have the brakes, transmission and radiator flushed and refilled as well, unless you've just done it. If you don't use the dealer make sure they do it right (flush, rather than just drain) and use the right fluids.
You should get the Bentley manual for details.
Good luck.

1990 750iLCan someone please explain to me the relationship between the brakes, power steering, and self leveling suspension? I have a 1989 750iL with self leveling suspension and the "oil reservoir" is used by all three systems. Then the brake fluid master cylinder says use only Dot 4 brake fluid and the oil reservoir says use only Pentosin 7.1. These systems are connected, so do the two different fluids mix? Also I just bought a can of Pentosin 7.1 and it is green and what is in my oil reservoir is dark brown, which looks like power steering fluid to me. Any clarification will be greatly appreciated - thanks.
