I could not agree more on the FM modulator. It may be easy to install and transportable, but the sound quality is not even close to a direct wired changer to the head unit. The CDXM30 can be opterated via an optional FM modulator if it makes you feel better. As far as you "old technology" concerns, I can't impagine what you are talking about. They play, they don't skip, they sound digital. The BMW/Pioneer changer that is in my 93 740i sounds great and works perfectly.

As far as the Aiwa or changing the head unit - I couldn't imagine having a piece of crap Aiwa unit with all it's rainbow colors ruining the authenticity of a BMW.

Get a changer that is compatable with your head unit.
